When and under what circumstances might Christians justifiably employ violence? That is the key question with which we will wrestle in this course. This course will examine both historical and contemporary accounts of war and violence and how they fit with the Christian life. Our readings will include the works of notable Christian thinkers, such as Martin Luther, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Stanley Hauerwas, and others. The course will focus upon discussion of the assigned texts, but may include lectures and group work. Evaluation will be based upon preparation for and participation in class discussions, a midterm paper, and a final research project. Quizzes and a midterm exam may also be used for evaluation.
