The Rev. Dr. J. Gavin Shumate ’17 explains hand-washing practices in a September 10 CDSP Facebook video.

When CDSP alum and physician the Rev. Dr. J. Gavin Shumate ’17 recorded a pair of public service announcements about mask-wearing and hand-washing practices for the seminary community, he didn’t expect it to turn into an invitation to bring his medical expertise to bear on the deliberations of global Anglicans.

But that’s what happened after someone with knowledge of a request from the Anglican Consultative Council saw Shumate’s videos, posted to the CDSP Facebook page on September 3 and September 10.

“On behalf of Presiding Bishop Michael Bruce Curry and President of the House of Deputies Gay Clark Jennings, I am pleased to convey news of your appointment to the newly established Anglican Health and Community Network Zoom Consultation,” wrote the Rev. Canon Michael Barlowe, executive officer of General Convention, in a September 11 letter to Shumate.

“This appointment recognizes your gifts, experience and commitment to the mission and ministry of The Episcopal Church. The request from the Anglican Communion … calls for the appointment of one or more representatives from the province with expertise and experience in health care.”

Congratulations, Dr. Shumate, and thanks once again for your service to CDSP and our siblings in Christ around the world.
