In his latest work, written expressly for seminarians, diocesan staff, priests, and worship committees, Louis Weil, the premier Anglican liturgical theologian, asks his readers to carefully consider the “sense” and logic of ritual action within a generous and expansive understanding of sacramental theology.
Dr. Weil looks back on his work shaping the liturgical life of the Episcopal Church through his involvement with the development of the 1979 Book of Common Prayer – and looks forward to the future of the church and its liturgical life. Through stories and first-person anecdotes, Weil does “narrative theology” as only he can.
Louis Weil is Hodges-Haynes Professor Emeritus of Liturgics at Church Divinity School of the Pacific and a widely regarded author and lecturer. He was honored as recipient of the Berakah Award for 2012 by the North American Academy of Liturgy, which proclaimed in its presentation to Dr Weil that “You lavishly open the heart of Anglican traditions, teaching ‘liturgy for living’ with elegance and love.”
Weil began teaching at Church Divinity School of the Pacific in 1988 and prior to that taught at Nashotah House in Wisconsin and Seminario Episcopal del Caribe in Puerto Rico. He is a founding member of Societas Liturgica, the International Anglican Liturgical Consultation, and the North American Academy of Liturgy, of which he is a former president. He has served three terms as a member of the Standing Commission on Liturgy and Music of the Episcopal Church since 1985. The Berakah citation for the Texas-born, Harvard- and Paris-educated Episcopal priest and scholar read: “Relishing the Feast, you know the taste and fragrance of Christ in many cultures, sounding the deep waters of Baptism. The world has been your classroom, the ecumenical Church your care, the surprise of God your idiom, the gracious cadence of prayer your music, wit and good theology for worshipping assemblies your style…. In addition to more than 100 articles, Weil’s books include Liturgy for Living (co-authored with Charles Price), Sacraments and Liturgy: the Outward Signs, and A Theology of Worship.
