Art and the Theological Imagination

Mon, Jul 23, 2012 9:00 am to Thu, Jul 26, 2012 4:00 pm

How can the visual arts deepen our understanding of theology? This four-day course at CDSP taught by visiting faculty will use images from Latin American colonial art as a vehicle for discussing major theological topics such as the Trinity, the Virgin Mary, and the Body of Christ.

While mainly historical and theological in focus, the course will also consider topics, such as the Suffering of Christ and Conversion, with implications for practical ministry. The relevance of these images from the Counter Reformation in the Americas for specifically Anglican theology and practice will also be considered.

Co-taught by The Most Rev. Frank T. Griswold (former presiding bishop), Prof. Mark Jordan (Harvard Divinity School), Prof. Kathryn Tanner (Yale Divinity School) and Ms. Jackie Winter (Anglican Theological Review).

Registration deadline July 1.
