    Position Description

The Church Divinity School of the Pacific is searching for a President and Dean to be chief executive, educational, and administrative officer, leading this vital seminary of the Episcopal Church into the future. CDSP educates leaders to serve congregations and society. It is a center for theological and intellectual inquiry, a developer of new models for theological education, and a partner in missionary exchange among Christians around the globe, as well as a leading resource for liturgical renewal and excellence in ministry.

Exciting opportunities and challenging new contexts are opening up for seminaries in the early 21st century. The changing needs of the Episcopal Church invite CDSP to build on the long-standing traditions of the denomination, and to explore many ways to make theological education available and accessible to a wider spectrum of students using a variety of delivery modes. CDSP is already a leader in such innovation, particularly through the online and hybrid educational capacities of its Center for Anglican Learning and Leadership (CALL), and its partnerships with a variety of dioceses and organizations.

The new President and Dean will be charged with continuing to lead the evolution of theological education at CDSP and with strengthening the financial and organizational infrastructure that supports our mission. He or she will help the school build on its strengths – academic excellence, collegial and creative faculty and staff, commitment to educational innovation, deep and broad connections with the wider church, ecumenical and interfaith partnerships in the Graduate Theological Union (GTU) – while continuing to extend its vision and adapt its mission to the needs of a changing world.

The new President and Dean must be able to inspire hope and resourcefulness amidst many opportunities for growth – both planned and unforeseen. We seek a person of integrity, spiritually grounded in the creative, redeeming, and transforming power of God. As a leader, he or she will be deeply collegial, respectful of many and differing gifts, and committed to building and managing diverse, effective, adaptable teams to carry out the work of the school.

The President and Dean is appointed by and responsible to the Board of Trustees. He or she oversees and manages the many facets of the seminary’s life: academics, worship, development, business, and student services. The pastoral relationship of the President and Dean with faculty, staff, and students sets a tone for the life of the whole school. He or she represents the school to the wider church and the world, articulating a vision of theological education. As a trustee of the Graduate Theological Union and member of the Council of Presidents, he or she participates in ecumenical and interfaith theological education at both professional and graduate levels.

We seek an inspiring visionary and a financially astute fund-raiser, a person of faith, intellect and passion, grounded and formed in the richness of the Anglican tradition. The new President and Dean may be ordained or lay, and will preferably hold an advanced theological degree. Candidates who would reflect the breadth of diversity found in the Episcopal Church are particularly encouraged to apply. Our new leader will combine proven experience in theological education with the enthusiasm and optimism to discern and empower its emerging forms, creating and seizing new opportunities to proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ and to equip the baptized for ministry.
