The GTU Community

Because CDSP is located in the center of ‘Holy Hill,’ home to six of the nine member seminaries of the Graduate Theological Union, members of the CDSP community are able to attend the wide range of special events, lectures, exhibits and public forums scheduled at the various schools and affiliated centers, which express the richness and diversity of this unique ecumenical and inter-religious community.

Neighborhood

CDSP is part of multiple neighborhoods, whose members and institutions enrich the experience of living, studying and worshiping.

  • The “Holy Hill” neighborhood, consisting of partner schools and centers of the Graduate Theological Union, sharing faculty, meals, events, a library and open spaces.
  • The Euclid Avenue neighborhood, providing a commercial block with places to gather, shop, eat and linger.
  • The North Berkeley neighborhood, with its own unique shops and restaurants along Shattuck Avenue, the meandering streets of the Berkeley Hills and the Berkeley Rose Garden.
  • The University of California/Berkeley neighborhood, one block south, with entertainment, recreation, libraries and parks within the sprawling campus.
  • Downtown Berkeley, also within walking distance, offering the amenities, shops, services and government offices of a city of more than 100,000 people, flavored by unique and eclectic traditions.
  • Berkeley is part of the East Bay, whose population center is nearby Oakland, but whose communities stretch from the Sacramento Delta to San Jose.
  • Across the bay, the Golden Gate and the city of San Francisco are always in view – fogbank permitting – beckoning East Bay residents to travel across the Bay Bridge or take public transportation (bus, BART, or ferry) to the renowned international city and all of its treasures.

CDSP students, as part of the GTU, have some privileges at the University of California, Berkeley:

Student Employment

CDSP depends on the dedicated work of its students, and is pleased to be able to offer on-campus employment opportunities for students that allows them to contribute to the CDSP community and work in an environment that appreciates a student’s need to balance academic work and employment.

Celtic Cross

The Celtic Cross Mission Society serves as the missionary “hands” of the seminary, raising both funds and awareness, while engaging in direct community outreach.

Charitable organizations in the San Francisco Bay area and across the country receive Celtic Cross Mission grants. Projects funded in the past include filling baby boxes at a rural a hospital, urban reforesting, supporting chaplaincy for first responders, youth programs, new seating for homeless ministry, production of a documentary on mission work in Haiti, new lighting for music program, feeding ministries, and educational materials regarding special needs children.

A team of students reviews the grant applications, researches needs, and presents recommendations to the seminary community. In addition, during the last year, three emergency grants were provided in response to immediate need. After Hurricanes Harvey and Maria grants were made through Episcopal Relief and Development and UNICEF to assist the victims. Locally, funds were provided to assist families following the wildfires in Napa and Sonoma Counties where 8400 structures burned and 43 people lost their lives.

Much of the focus of Celtic Cross in the fall is on raising funds, primarily through parking cars on Cal football game days – turning the parking lot into baby blankets, clean air, teaching supplies, food for hungry bellies, and more. Parking cars becomes mission evangelism, as students share stories of the projects with those who use the lot, connecting them with the Good News they are helping to support. Celtic Cross also is the recipient of community night offerings to support the annual grant process.

All members of the CDSP community, including faculty, staff, students, spouses, and partners, are members of the Celtic Cross Mission Society.

Applications for 2020 mission grants are now open and will close August 31. Grant awards will be announced in September. For more information, contact the Society at CelticCross@cdsp.edu.

John McLean Wolff serves as the Celtic Cross Missioner for 2022-23.

Housing

Two types of housing are offered to students at CDSP: Single dormitory-style rooms and one- to four-bedroom apartments.

Easton and Gibbs Halls on the CDSP campus offers single rooms with basic furniture in a dormitory-style building.

Unfurnished apartments with one- to four-bedrooms are available in Nichols Hall, a CDSP-owned apartment building, one block from the CDSP campus at 1700 Le Roy Avenue.

Campus Safety

Church Divinity School of the Pacific (CDSP) highly values the individual and collective security of its students, faculty, and staff. This is so not only because it cares about individual safety, but also because safety is a pre-requisite for the creation of an academic community devoted to research, learning and teaching.

In addition, the Congress and Department of Education have established many requirements for campus crime policies and reporting. The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Crime Statistics Act (Clery Act), codified at 20 U.S.C. 1092(f) as part of the Higher Education Act of 1965 (HEA), and the Higher Education Opportunity Act (HEOA) of 2008 require that CDSP disclose policy information and crime statistics as part of a campus security report published annually.
