| Financial Aid
The financial aid application deadline for the following academic year is:
New students are strongly encouraged to submit their financial aid applications by the above deadline. You can and are encouraged to apply for financial aid before being offered admission to CDSP. However, applications submitted by new students after this deadline will be considered. All students should submit financial aid applications as soon as possible.
Financial aid applications are available beginning in January of each year. Students seeking any type of financial aid, including grants, federal work study, or federal government loans, must apply each year for the following academic year. The financial aid application includes the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and CDSP financial aid supplemental materials. Completed applications must be postmarked by the above dates for priority consideration. The financial aid office begins making awards in late April of each year for the following Fall semester.
The Financial Aid Office strongly encourages downloading applications. Please download an application here.

In administering its financial assistance programs CDSP does not discriminate on the basis of religion, race, color, ethnic origin, sex, national origin, marital status, sexual orientation, disabilities, or age.
Each student is responsible for his or her academic and living expenses. It is assumed that other sources of support, such as parish, diocese, foundations, part-time employment, family, and loans will be utilized to help offset educational costs. CDSP grants, federal government loans, and institutional employment are used to augment these other sources.
There are three categories of aid available to CDSP students. Students are encouraged to explore all of the options described below.
1. Grant-In-Aid
Grant-In-Aid (GIA), based on need, availability of funds, and satisfactory academic progress, is available through the CDSP Financial Aid Office. Students can expect to receive a similar financial aid package from CDSP each year of their program, barring any changes in their financial situation. However, students are required to reapply for assistance every year by the published deadlines.
2. Federal Work Study/Institutional Work Program
Eligible* students are encouraged to consider employment as a source of financial support. Two programs are available, Federal Work Study (FWS) and the Institutional Work Program (IWP). These programs allow students who are eligible for need-based aid to do part-time work, for which they are paid an hourly wage. The FWS program is jointly funded by the federal government and CDSP. The IWP is funded solely by CDSP. Jobs include assistance in administrative offices, maintenance work, gardening, and refectory services.
*Eligibility is determined by need and is indicated in the financial aid award letter.
3. Government Loan Programs
CDSP students may participate in two federal government loan programs. These funds are awarded annually based on need, available funds, and satisfactory academic progress. Applications for these loans are available through the Financial Aid Office.
The Federal Subsidized Stafford Student Loan: This is a federally supported loan program in which eligible graduate students may borrow up to $8,500 per year from participating lenders. Students must be eligible for need-based aid to receive a Federal Subsidized Stafford loan. There is no repayment or interest accrual while the student is enrolled at least half-time. Six months after ceasing at least half-time enrollment, interest begins to accrue and repayment of at least $50 per month must begin; borrowers have a maximum of ten years to repay the loan. There are four repayment options. Deferment and cancellation provisions are available. Students who have outstanding Federal Stafford loans should, if possible, borrow future loans from their previous lender and guarantor.
The Federal Unsubsidized Stafford Student Loan: The terms of this loan are identical to the Subsidized Stafford loan outlined above with the following exception: Students are responsible for paying the interest on the Unsubsidized Stafford loan (the federal government does not pay the interest on these loans while the student is enrolled.) The interest can be capitalized onto the principle balance at the request of the student.
Students who are not eligible for the Subsidized Stafford loan may borrow up to $10,000 in an Unsubsidized Stafford loan. Students eligible for amounts less than $8,500 in Subsidized Stafford loans can "make up the difference" in Unsubsidized Stafford loans.
All loan program applications are subject to approval by the Financial Aid Office; total financial aid awards (including loan programs, grants, and work study) cannot exceed the total cost of educational and living expenses as determined by the Financial Aid Office.
Veterans Educational Benefits: CDSP students who have served in the United States Armed Forces may receive veterans educational benefits while attending CDSP. For further information, please contact the CDSP Registrar at 510-204-0715. |
