Dr. Sandra Collins
Registration Deadline: Thu, Sep 20, 2012
CEUs: 2

The course introduces the vibrant history and literature as presented in the books of Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy.  Along the way, we will discover the rich emphasis on family dynamics, genealogy, the different blocks of “law” and, where appropriate, the sources we find behind these books.  Ultimately, we will consider each book as a narrative with a plot, characters, and themes as well as their enduring significance in Christian faith, life, and ministry.

Sandra (Sandee) Collins holds a PhD from the University of Pittsburgh with a concentration in Jewish Studies as well as master’s degrees in church history and library science. She is currently Academic Dean and faculty in Biblical Studies at the Byzantine Catholic Seminary in Pittsburgh, PA.  Sandee has taught biblical courses and general religion classes at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Her dissertation, "Weapons Upon Her Body: The Female Heroic in the Hebrew Bible" will be published by Cambridge Scholars Press in 2012.

Unless people in parishes have business backgrounds where CEO-like leadership was required most are not prepared with the knowledge or acumen necessary to ensure sensitivity, awareness and accountability for the processes surrounding sound financial management and protection of church assets. Leadership is the key to successful implementaion, and it is often a learned attribute. This learning series uses real-life examples and exericses to illustrate the awareness and leadership necessary.

James is a CPA who has performed over 200 audits on churches. Prior to his retirement from IBM, he was the founder of the Learning Center of Excellence, a global think tank on adult learning, and was the founder and worldwide practice leader of the IBM Leadership and Management Development consulting practice for IBM Global Services. The Rev. Dan Prechtel, DMin.
Registration Deadline: Thu, Sep 20, 2012
CEUs: 2

We live in a time when many people are seeking spiritual guidance from a wide range of sources.  This course will provide a forum for exploring major historical developments in Christian practices of spiritual guidance and their contemporary expressions, and assist participants in recognizing how they receive and share in spiritual guidance in their own lives.

Through discussion of weekly readings from Sacred Companions: The Gift of Spiritual Friendship & Direction by David G. Benner, and other materials, key elements and forms of contemporary spiritual guidance and direction will be examined.  Participants are invited to practice spiritual companionship attributes with other people in their own setting and regularly journal about those experiences--as background for discussions, and most importantly as a foundation for developing skills in spiritual guidance.  A reflection paper will help integrate the learning.

Dan served as core faculty and program director for the Institute of Spiritual Companionship; adjunct faculty and chaplain at Seabury-Western Theological Seminary teaching courses in spiritual direction, advanced spiritual group leadership, and spiritual formation in small groups. He founded Lamb & Lion Spiritual Guidance Ministries in 1993 and has over twenty years of experience as a spiritual director for individuals, groups and organizations. He is author of the book Where Two or Three are Gathered: Spiritual Direction for Small Groups.

The Rev. Dcn. Susanne Watson Epting
Registration Deadline: Thu, Sep 20, 2012
CEUs: 2

Deacons are charged by the church to "interpret the needs, hopes and concerns of the world to the church." Some believe this charge is not unlike that of the Prophets called to articulate God's vision. What are helpful ways of grounding ourselves? How do we, with God's help, find, sustenance when being true to our baptismal and ordination vows becomes extra challenging?

Susanne Watson Epting (M.A. in American Studies, University of iowa) is the Director of the Association for Episcopal Deacons (AED) and serves on the Primates' Task Force on Theological Education in the Anglican Communion and the Episcopal Church task force on Proclaiming Education for all.
